Our favorite stainless knot (wire to diver) is a simple over hand knot. That’s it! No special crimps, etc. Just loop the wire through the swivel on the diver, come back around and put the tag end back through the hole and cinch it down. It will never ever break or come loose…that’s a fact!
Our favorite line to line knot for fluorocarbon leaders on our bird reels or rigger rods is the back to back uni knot. You can search online for pictures and examples. It is a fairly difficult knot to tie, but it is tough as nails!
By far, the best knot for a backer-to-copper or copper-to-leader is the Blood Run Twist. This is the ONLY knot we recommend for successfully using our copper. The Blood Run Twist is essentially an Albright Knot started off with a tight haywire twist of the copper tag onto itself, depicted below. It is important to remember that copper is a “soft metal”. Twisted soft metal can separate strands when the line is bent, such as the start of a traditional Albright knot. By “Haywire twisting” prior to the Albright, the strands are twisted together to provide a solid tight section of copper just behind the copper knot. The strands actually fuse together on this tight haywire twist, before you create your Albright over the twist.
First, bend back about 5 inches of copper line.
Then pinch the hairpin at the end of the bend with your right hand, then pinch the two pieces of copper with your left hand about 3/8 inch back from the hairpin and start to twist with your right hand, sliding your left hand further down the twist as you go.
When you are done, you should have a small loop end in your right hand, and about 4-5 inches of tight twist down the main line with your left hand.
Cut the remaining tag end of the twist off, and you should have a nice tight spiral haywire twist of copper together, with a small loop back on the hairpin to use for your Albright.
Now you can start your Albright using the small loop. We like a “reverse Albright” where you go long on your loop, and then do your six wraps backwards towards the hole you came through.
Now wet the backer down with your tongue and start a nice smooth pull back to tighten up your Albright. You can pull the wraps tighter towards the hairpin as you go, finally yanking on your backer to cinch it down tight. Cut off the tag from your backer and you have a nice tight Blood Run Twist.
