What is the difference between 32lb and 45lb Super Copper and how should they be used?
32lb Super Copper is used primarily to fish the top 40 feet of the water column. The most common segments are 50, 100, 150 and 200 feet. 32lb Super Copper is obviously smaller in diameter than the heavier 45lb copper which is primarily used to reach deeper depths. The advantages in this scenario is that smaller reels can be used, with smaller level wind guides for passage of the knots/swivels onto the reel. 45lb Super Copper is much heavier and larger in diameter, suitable for larger trolling reels with large level wind guides and large backer capacities. Popular segments are 250, 300, 350, 400 and 450 feet.
How do I spool copper line on my reel?
The easiest and most accurate way is to put a broom handle or long handled screw driver through the center of the spool and have someone hold onto the spool or just place it vertically in a rod holder on your boat.
How do I purchase less than 1000 foot spools of copper?
Please bring your fishing reels to one of our preferred retailers listed on the “retailer” page to have the desired amount of fishing line spooled onto your reel. Remember to request Blood Run Premium Fluorocarbon leader in 30lb test for your copper leader material.
How do I measure the correct length of copper fishing line to put on my reel?
We recommend use of an inexpensive line counter that snaps onto your fishing rod. Cabelas and other retailers sell a line counter product made by Shakespeare. Do not use a linecounter reel as the linecounters on reels are not accurate unless the reel is over 3/4 full with line.
What type of backer should I use for my super copper line?
There are many lines that will fit the purpose, however our pro staff members have had fantastic success using Blood Run 30lb Premium Hi Vis Backer Line for backing material. It is a good idea to check on occasion for nicks in the backer material where you snap your planer board on, as eventually this may need to be cut back and re-tied.
What kind of leader material can I use for super copper line?
We recommend using Blood Run Tackle Co 30lb test Fluorocarbon leader material, spooling approximately 30-50 feet on at the end of your copper.
What type of reel should I used for spooling up super copper line?
We recommend using the Shimano Tekota 700 for our 32lb copper. The 700 Tekotas are large enough for 32lb copper setups up to 250 feet. When using the 45lb super copper or longer segments of copper such as 500 or 600, we recommend using Shimano Tekota 800′s which have a larger levelwind guide to allow passage of the bigger knot with the 45lb copper, as well as a slightly larger line capacity for longer setups of 32lb coppers, such as 300, 350 and 450.
Where do I snap on my planer board?
We recommend snapping your planer board onto your backer after you have let out the full amount of copper plus another 30 feet of backer. Generally your release on your planer board will slip in rough seas. By snapping your planer board on further up into your backer you allow for some slippage of the board without allowing it to fully slip down to your albright knot between your backer and copper.
How do I run multiple super copper lines on the same side of the boat?
It is important to put your shortest rigs the furthest out from the boat to avoid tangles. For example, you would run a 200 copper on your outside planer board, then run a 250 copper just inside of that, and then a 300 copper closest to the boat. By deploying in this way your fish will pass over the deeper lines closer to the boat.
How do I deploy a super copper rig?
We recommend opening the bail on the reel, leaving the clicker on, and hand feeding the leader and copper out for at least 50 feet past your knot. Generally your knot will catch on the guides as you let the line out, so it is important to keep your thumb on the spool and slowing hand line the copper out past the tip of the rod and let it start pulling itself off the reel. If you do not leave the clicker on the reel, you run the risk of the knot catching on a guide and backspooling on the reel. Once approximately 50 feet or more of copper is deployed in the water, you can turn off the clicker and while keeping your thumb on the spool slowly let the copper continue to run off the reel until all of the copper is deployed in the water.
How far should I space my planer boards when running multiple copper rigs per side?
We recommend that you should space your planer boards by about 25 or 30 feet. This is hard to estimate as the boards drag back and off to the side of the boat, but use common sense to allow for enough spacing between planer boards, especially when running rotating flashers.
Can I run multiple same length segments of copper next to each other on the same side of the boat?
Yes you can, but we recommend up to 50 feet of spacing between planer boards, especially when pulling rotating flashers so as to avoid tangles. Most of our pro staff do NOT run the same length copper rigs on the same side of the boat, rather staggering them such as a 200, 250 and 300 to completely cover the vertical strike box in the water column.
Can I repair my super copper line if I get a kink or tangle?
Yes. Simply cut the copper where it may have become kinked and then overlap the two loose ends by about 3 inches. Then rap the loose ends tightly around the overlap going in either direction. This is essentially a haywire twist that will not come loose no matter how big a fish you may hook up.
What kind of planer board should I use to run super copper fishing line?
We recommend using Church Tackle planer boards as the best planers to run our copper fishing line. The smaller “bird” type planer boards or “ski” style planer boards are not suitable compared to a heavy inline planer board from Church. For pulling our 32lb product, we only recommend using the Church TX-22 planer board. For pulling our 45lb super copper we ONLY recommend the Church TX-44 planer board. It is the only planer board on the market in our opinion that is capable of pulling our 45lb copper out to where it needs to be. Too many guys use small boards from other manufacturers and essentially drag the copper behind the boat. When pulling copper, you need to pull it hard out to the side of the boat to widen your spread and avoid tangles.
What kind of lures can I run off super copper fishing line?
Any kind of lure!
Can I run super copper on my diving planers?
No. Copper fishing line does not have the tensile strength and it has far too big a diameter to fish divers from. Blood Run Tackle stainless wire is the appropriate line for running divers.
What is different about Blood Run Premium Super Hard Monofilament from other manufacturers monofilament?
Blood Run Premium Super Hard Monofilament is designed for extreme abrasion resistance, UV resistance, and fast sinking rate. Compared to standard monofilaments, Blood Run Super Hard is designed to be the toughest monofilament on the market, designed to withstand abuse of chafing across wire lines and cables. Blood Run Premium Super Hard also has a UV resistant coating which prevents against chaulking of line which occurs after lengthy periods exposed to damaging UltraViolet rays. UltraViolet rays are the worst enemy of standard monofilament lines, weaking the fiber and causing fracture and weakness in the line.
